Chennai Metro Rail is a public rapid transit system serving Chennai in India. The first phase of the project consists of two corridors covering a length of 45.1km and is partially open for public service.
On June 1, 2016, the Indian Union Cabinet approved the Chennai Metro Rail Phase I Project Corridor 1 Extension. The extension will run from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar, for an additional 9km and will provide improved access to public transport, mostly for industrial workers commuting to the central business district.
The project is scheduled to be completed by March 2018 and the ridership expected in the first year of operation is 160,000 passengers per day.
